Erin Van Blarigan, ScD, of the University of California, San Francisco, CA, talks about the guidelines that cancer survivors should follow to reduce the risk of cancer recurrence. These guidelines are to achieve and maintain a healthy body weight, engage in regular physical activity and eat a diet rich in wholegrains, fruits and vegetables. She explains that a study which looked at whether colon cancer patients who follow these guidelines live longer, showed that those who adhered to the guidelines had a 40% lower risk of death than those who did not. Therefore, it is important for healthcare professionals to help patients learn about and maintain the guidelines.
