Sanjay Popat, BSc, MBBS, FRCP, PhD, is a Consultant Thoracic Medical Oncologist at The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, London, UK.

Prof. Popat qualified from Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals in 1994, completed general medical training at the Royal Brompton and the Hammersmith Hospital, and medical oncology training at The Royal Marsden. Following this, he was awarded a PhD in Molecular Genetics. He then did a postdoctoral Clinician Scientist Fellowship, and subsequently a HEFCE Clinical Senior Lectureship.

His main scientific interests include identification and validation of DNA variants that influence the development of thoracic tumors, the identification of biomarkers predictive of therapeutic effect, as well as novel therapeutic strategies for the treatment of thoracic tumors.

Prof. Popat is Chair of the British Thoracic Oncology Group (BTOG) and is immediate past Chair of the Advanced Diseases Sub-group of the UK NCRI Lung Cancer Clinical Studies Group. Further, he is active in the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Lung Group.

Throughout his professional life, he has participated in multiple clinical trials and has published in the fields of molecular genetics, therapeutic biomarkers, and medical oncology. Prof. Popat has received various national and international awards for his contributions to the field.
