David Tougeron, MD, PhD, Poitiers University Hospital, Poitiers, France, comments the Phase II OESIRI-PRODIGE 62 trial (NCT03719924) of nanoliposomal irinotecan (Nal-IRI) with 5-fluorouracil versus paclitaxel as second-line treatment in patients with metastatic esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (mESCC) following progression after platinum-based therapies. The primary endpoint, overall survival at 9 months, was not met and both arms showed low efficacy. While paclitaxel demonstrated a better safety profile, more patients experienced quality-of-life deterioration in both groups, warranting further exploration of treatment options. This interview took place at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) 2024 Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
