Breast cancer is the most common cancer type in women and in 70-80% of patients with early-stage, non-metastatic disease, it is curable. Breast cancer consists of three major tumor subtypes which can be categorized according to estrogen or progesterone receptor expression and ERBB2 gene amplification. The three molecular subtypes have distinctive risk profiles and treatment strategies. Optimal therapy for each patient depends on tumor subtype, anatomic cancer stage, and patient preferences.
Breast cancer is a molecularly heterogeneous disease, and this is reflected in recent treatment advances, with more emphasis being placed on biologically targeting therapies as well as treatment de-escalation.
