Nabil Wasif, MD, Mayo Clinic, Scottsdale, AZ, discusses the evolving relationship between surgical volume and outcomes, known as the volume-outcome association. He explains that this concept, first identified around 20 years ago, suggests that the more frequently a surgeon or institution performs a particular operation, the better the outcomes, as “practice makes perfect.” However, the relevance of this association has shifted in contemporary practice. Dr Wasif’s study explores whether this relationship has changed over time, and the findings show that advances in surgical techniques and care have improved outcomes, reducing mortality even in complex surgeries. This progress has lessened the impact of the volume-outcome association in modern surgical practice. This interview took place at the ESSO 43 Congress in Antwerp, Belgium.
