ESMO 2024 | Challenges in cancer care for adolescents and young adults

David Thomas, MD, PhD, University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia, discusses the unique challenges adolescents and young adults (AYA) with cancer face. Pediatric care is centralized, while adult care is dominated by aging-related cancers, leaving AYAs feeling isolated. Despite high cure rates, current care models are inadequate for supporting the long-term needs of AYAs, who may have decades of life post-treatment. Improved follow-up care is needed to address the long-term health of this patient population. This interview took place at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) 2024 Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
