BCC 2025 | Impact of whole-breast irradiation in low-risk older breast cancer

Isabel Rubio, MD, PhD, Clinica Universidad de Navarra, Madrid, Spain, comments on oncological outcomes in older patients with early-stage, luminal A-like, low-risk breast cancer following conservative surgery. Analysis of data from the EUSOMA database suggests that whole-breast irradiation (WBI), particularly when combined with endocrine therapy (ET), significantly improves survival. Both treatments individually, and more notably in combination, were associated with reduced mortality, highlighting the potential benefit of WBI in this patient population despite the relatively short follow-up period. This interview took place at the 2025 St. Gallen International Breast Cancer Consensus Meeting in Vienna, Austria.
