ESMO Breast 2025 | Advancing breast cancer screening with AI-driven detection and risk prediction

Kristina Lang, MD, PhD, Lund University, Malmö, Sweden discusses the growing role of artificial intelligence (AI) in breast cancer screening to support both risk prediction and tumor detection. Studies such as the ScreenTrustMRI study (NCT04832594), which evaluated AI-based risk models to guide supplemental imaging, and the MASAI trial (NCT04838756), which assessed the use of AI in mammography screening, demonstrate how AI can enhance diagnostic precision, detect clinically relevant cancers earlier, and help manage radiologist workload. These developments reflect the growing role of AI in shaping the future of cancer diagnostics. This interview took place at the 2025 European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Breast Cancer Annual Congress in Munich, Germany.
