ESMO Breast 2025 | Targeted therapy insights from the ROME trial in breast cancer

Andrea Botticelli, MD, PhD, Sapienza University of Rome, Rome, Italy, discusses findings from the breast cancer subgroup of the ROME trial (NCT04591431), which assessed personalized therapy based on molecular profiling. Patients were randomized to targeted therapy or standard of care following next-generation sequencing and tumor board review. While overall outcomes favored standard therapy, patients with high tumor mutational burden showed improved response and survival with targeted approaches. This interview took place at the 2025 European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Breast Cancer Annual Congress in Munich, Germany.
