ESSO 44 | Gastric cancer with peritoneal metastases: staging, CRS, and HIPEC strategies
Beate Rau, MD, PhD, MBA, FEBS, Charite University Hospital, Berlin, Germany, discusses the challenges and evolving treatment strategies for patients with gastric cancer and peritoneal metastases. She emphasizes that peritoneal metastasis is often under-recognized in metastatic gastric cancer and highlights the critical role of laparoscopy for accurate staging. Prof. Rau discusses cytoreductive surgery combined with intraperitoneal heated chemotherapy (HIPEC) as a strategy to improve outcomes, referencing ongoing trials including the Phase III GASTRIPEC-I (NCT02158988) and DRAGON-01 (ChiCTR-IIR-16009802) trials. She notes that patients with isolated peritoneal metastasis, particularly those with distal locally advanced gastric cancer, may derive the greatest survival benefit from this localized therapeutic approach, complementing systemic chemotherapy.
