Marie Hanaoka, MD, Institute of Science Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan, explores how AI-derived surgical quality metrics could be incorporated into robotic surgery training curricula and competency assessment frameworks. AI-based reviewing systems could increase understanding of the appropriate decision plane to improve surgical quality. In addition, in competency assessment frameworks, AI-based review could create a more objective assessment of surgical mobilization and dissection quality, and reduce the burden on human reviewers. This interview took place at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Gastrointestinal Cancer 2026 Congress in Munich, Germany.
