WCLC 2026 | Concerns with integrating AI into surgical practice for patients with lung cancer

Kelvin Lau, BA, MA, MBBS, PhD, FRCS, Barts Health NHS Trust, London, UK, explores concerns surrounding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in surgical practice for patients with lung cancer. AI models typically use limited data sources, resulting in a bias, which inclusion of more data from a wider range of patients could reduce. In addition, Dr Lau highlights that many AI models are black box algorithms where decision-making is not explained, reducing trust in the outcomes. This interview took place at the IASLC 2026 World Conference on Lung Cancer congress in Seoul, Republic of Korea.
