UKONS 2016 | The importance of clinical nurse specialists in providing supportive care for Radium-223 treatment

Louise Causer, clinical nurse specialist, The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, London, UK discusses the importance of clinical specialist nurses in providing supportive care for men undergoing Radium-223 treatment for prostate cancer. Her association with Radium-223 started in 2004 when was asked to get involved in the studies administering Radium-223. But with background in oncology, she sort out other clinical nurse specialists involved with patients with prostate cancer. This is very important as prostate cancer is a long term condition, and it is difficult for nurses involved in the technical aspects of administering Radium-223 to provide the support needed to deal with the large number of problems and challenges prostate cancer patients face. She explains how Radium-223 treatment fits very nicely in a the type of pathway one sees one sees with chemotherapy, where multidisciplinary pre-assessment takes place. Recorded at the 2016 Annual Meeting of the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS), held in Brighton, UK.
