Alberto Puccini, MD, is a Medical Oncologist specializing in GI cancers at the IRCCS Humanitas Research Hospital, Milan, Italy, within the Department of Medical Oncology and Hematology. He attended the University of Genoa, Genoa, Italy to earn his degree in Medicine and diploma in Medical Oncology. He then relocated to the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA, as a postdoctoral fellow in the Gastrointestinal (GI) Oncology Research Program, and subsequently completed his residency in Medical Oncology at San Martino Polyclinic Hospital, Genoa, Italy.
Speaking on treatments for gastrointestinal cancers
Dr Puccini’s current research interests are centered on GI tract tumors, including those of the esophagus, stomach, colorectal area, and small intestine. His research spans both clinical and translational studies, particularly in understanding and advancing treatments for these malignancies. Dr Puccini is deeply engaged in oncological genetics, with a specific interest in Lynch Syndrome and its implications for cancer susceptibility. Additionally, he investigates tumors that onset in young adults, aiming to elucidate their unique biological and clinical characteristics.
Dr Puccini has played a significant role in the Phase III TOSCA trial, which investigated FOLFOX and CAPOX chemotherapies in patients with high-risk stage II/III colon cancer. This trial aimed to determine the most effective duration of these chemotherapy regimens to improve patient outcomes. Additionally, Dr Puccini has addressed the use of immunotherapies in the adjuvant and neoadjuvant settings.
