Academic history

Alexander Spira, MD, PhD, FACP, FASCO, obtained his medical degree from New York University School of Medicine, New York, NY. Prior to this, he completed his undergraduate studies in Chemistry at Harvard University, Cambridge, MA. After finishing his academic studies, Dr Spira trained at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA, where he earned many awards and distinctions, before completing his specialism in medical oncology at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, MD. Dr Spira is also Assistant Professor at Johns Hopkins University and is involved in mentoring medical students. Dr Spira currently works as a Medical Oncologist and Director at Virginia Cancer Specialists Research Institute, Fairfax, VA.

Speaking on thoracic cancer treatment approaches

Dr Spira’s primary research focus lies in lung cancer, although he also maintains a strong interest in gastrointestinal (GI) cancer. He serves as Director of the Phase I Trial Program, with a focus on immunotherapy and personalized medicine treatment strategies. Dr Spira serves as Co-Chair of the USOncology Thoracic Oncology Committee, Chair of the USOncology Research Executive Committee, and contributes to the USOncology National Policy Board Executive Committee.

He has actively participated in clinical trials focused on non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), including the significant landmark MARIPOSA study. This study examined the efficacy of combining amivantamab and lazertinib in comparison to osimertinib. As a result of his meaningful contribution to the field, he has consistently been honored as a leading physician in Northern Virginia Magazine and Washingtonian magazine over several years.
