Academic History
Andrea Apolo, MD, is a renowned expert in bladder cancer research. She currently serves as Head of the Bladder Cancer Section in the Genitourinary Malignancies Branch at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), Bethesda, MD, and Director of the Bladder Cancer and Genitourinary Tumors Multidisciplinary Clinic. Dr Apolo graduated summa cum laude from Lehman College, City University of New York, NY, with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Biochemistry. She earned her medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City, NY. After completing residency training in internal medicine at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, she pursued a medical oncology fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York, NY. In 2010, she was recruited to the NCI’s Physician-Scientist Early Investigator Program to establish a translational bladder cancer program.

Dr Apolo is dedicated to enhancing the lives of patients with genitourinary tumors through the design and implementation of clinical trials that test novel therapeutic agents. Her research emphasizes developing targeted therapies for bladder cancer and rare genitourinary tumors, with a focus on immunotherapies, angiogenesis inhibitors, and MET-targeting agents.
Dr Apolo has played a pivotal role in advancing immunotherapeutic agents, leading to multiple FDA approvals, including avelumab for advanced bladder cancer. She actively participates in national and international committees, including the American Society for Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the Bladder Cancer Program Committee of the Society of Urologic Oncology (SUO), and the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network (BCAN) Think Tank Steering Committee, contributing her expertise to the field through various leadership roles.
