Academic History

Arndt Vogel, MD, PhD, is a Professor and Clinician Scientist in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of Toronto and the Joint Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at University Health Network and the Toronto Center for Liver Disease (TCLD), Toronto, Canada. He is currently appointed as the Longo Family Chair in Liver Cancer Research and has cancer clinics at the Toronto General Hospital and the UHN Princess Margaret Cancer Center, Toronto, Canada.

He was previously a managing senior consultant at Hannover Medical School, Hannover, Germany. Prof. Vogel specializes in translational and clinical research to investigate the pathogenesis of hepatobiliary cancers and the use of precision medicine for gastrointestinal cancers. He is also a member of societies such as European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO), American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL), and an ESMO GI ambassador in 2024.

Speaking on precision medicine for gastrointestinal cancers

Prof. Vogel currently leads the Vogel laboratory at the Toronto General Hospital Research Institute, Toronto, Canada, which focuses on the pathogenesis, therapeutic interventions, and drug resistance mechanisms in hepatobiliary tumors and hepatocellular carcinoma. He leads a research program which also adopts precision medicine to identify novel targets for anticancer drug development in hepatocellular carcinoma and biliary tract cancer. Since 2010, he is an active member and chairman of the Hepatobiliary Cancer Study Group of the AIO, a working group on internal oncology in Germany. He is currently leading several clinical trials to test the efficacy of novel drugs and therapeutic regimens for the treatment of non-resectable hepatocellular carcinoma.
