Academic history

Axel Merseburger, MD, PhD, is a highly regarded oncologist who currently serves as Professor of Urology and the head of the Department of Urology at University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein, Lübeck, Germany. He earned his degree in Medicine from Hannover Medical School, Hanover, Germany, and pursued specialized training in surgery and urology at Eberhard Karls University, Tübingen, Germany.

Additionally, he completed a research fellowship at the Miller School of Medicine, Miami, FL. Prior to his current appointment, Prof. Merseburger held roles as Associate Professor and later full Professor at Hannover Medical School, and also led the Department of Urology at the University of Lübeck in Germany.

Prof. Merseburger’s research is deeply rooted in the field of uro-oncology, with a particular focus on the molecular and clinical aspects of prostate cancer, renal cell carcinoma, and transitional cell carcinoma. His work is centred on identifying biomarkers and prognostic factors that can improve diagnosis and treatment outcomes for these cancers.

He has led key studies such as the TITAN clinical trial, which investigated apalutamide in combination with androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) for metastatic castration-sensitive prostate cancer (mCSPC). His work in this area contributes to the evolving treatment landscape for prostate cancer, providing insights into novel therapeutic approaches.
