Academic History
Bertrand Tombal, MD, PhD, is Chairman of Urology at Cliniques Universitaires Saint-Luc in Brussels and a Full Professor of Urology at the Université catholique de Louvain (UCLouvain). He earned his MD from UCLouvain in 1990 and his PhD from the same institution in 2003, during which he investigated the influence of growth factors on apoptosis in prostate cancer cells, including research conducted at Johns Hopkins University.

Prof. Tombal is internationally recognized for his expertise in uro-oncology, particularly advanced prostate and bladder cancer, and the development of novel biological therapies and hormonal treatments. He has led several research studies and published over 400 papers, books, and book chapters. His clinical and scientific leadership includes serving as President of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC), one of Europe’s preeminent academic cancer study groups.
