Academic History

Davide Melisi, MD, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Medical Oncology and Director of the Digestive Molecular and Clinical Oncology Research Unit at the University of Verona, Verona, Italy. He is also Head of the Investigational Cancer Therapeutics Clinical Unit at the University Hospital of Verona since 2020.

Dr Melisi initially received his MD and PhD degrees at University of Naples “Federico II” Medical School, Naples, Italy, as well as completing his residency and fellowship in Internal Medicine/Medical Oncology at the same institution. He additionally was a Postdoctoral Fellow at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX.

Speaking on precision medicine in gastrointestinal cancers

Dr Melisi’s research primarily focuses on gastrointestinal cancers, leading translational projects that bridge the laboratory to early clinical trials. Topics of interest include genomic profiling of biliary tract tumors to identify targets like FGFR2 for treatments such as pemigatinib, developing TGF-β pathway inhibitors for pancreatic cancer, and identifying blood-based biomarkers to predict treatment response. His work has been recognized with multiple honors, including the “Gaetano Salvatore” award for medical research and Order of Merit of the Italian Republic.
