Dirk Arnold
Academic history
Dirk Arnold, MD, currently leads the Asklepios Tumorzentrum Hamburg, Hamburg, Germany, overseeing a network of seven community hospitals, and heads the Department of Oncology, Hematology, and Palliative Care at AK Altona, Hamburg, Germany. He completed his degree in Medicine at the Universities of Ulm and Berlin, Germany. In 2002, he specialized in Internal Medicine before successfully passing the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Examination. Prof. Arnold further advanced in his qualifications, earning certifications in Hematology and Ocology, as well as in Palliative Care. In 2010, he became the Director of the University Cancer Centre (UCCH), Hamburg, Germany, and held key positions in Oncology and Hematology at the Universities of Halle-Wittenberg, Freiburg, and Berlin.
Speaking on biomarkers in gastrointestinal cancers
Prof. Arnold’s research primarily concentrates on gastrointestinal (GI) cancers, with a particular emphasis on innovative therapeutic methods informed by biomarkers and comprehensive treatment strategies that involve various medical specialties. He has chaired the Colorectal Cancer Study Group within the German AIO, a prominent collaborative entity in clinical oncology. His role as a founding member of the AIO’s Central Clinical Trials Office highlights his substantial proficiency in clinical research methodologies. Moreover, Prof. Arnold is committed to developing extensive collaborative research frameworks and integrated cancer center networks.
He has been directly involved with the FIRE-3 trial, which investigated the efficacy of combining FOLFIRI chemotherapy with either cetuximab or bevacizumab in the first-line treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer, demonstrating his dedication to advancing treatment options and improving patient outcomes in GI oncology.
