Giannis Mountzios, MD, PhD, MSc, is the Director of the 4th Oncology Department and Clinical Trials Unit at the Henry Dunant Hospital Center in Athens, Greece. Dr Mountzios obtained his medical degree from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Thessaloniki, Greece, then completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the Airforce General Hospital of Athens, Athens, Greece, and in Medical Oncology at Alexandra Hospital of the University of Athens School of Medicine, Athens, Greece. Dr Mountzios also obtained a master’s degree in Translational and Clinical Research in Oncology from the Institut Gustave Roussy and University Paris XI (Paris-Sud), Villejuif, France, and gained his PhD in Thoracic Oncology from the University of Athens School of Medicine, Athens, Greece.
Dr Mountzios is a member of the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Faculty for non-metastatic non-small cell lung cancer and a member of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Lung Cancer Group. He has received fellowships from the American Society of Clinical Oncology, ESMO, and the Hellenic Society for Medical Oncology, and has held several leadership roles in ESMO.
Speaking on immunotherapy and biomarkers in lung cancer
Dr Mountzios is an expert in the treatment of lung cancers, and has a particular interest in novel immunotherapies. He has been involved in several international trials of new immune checkpoint inhibitors and was the first author of the landmark DeLLphi-304 trial investigating tarlatamab in small-cell lung cancer. In addition, he is interested in the growing rates of lung cancer in younger patients, and leads the Y-LUNG initiative to investigate underlying mechanisms driving lung cancer in this population.
