Academic History

Prof. Hope Rugo, MD, is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Hematology and Oncology at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, where she is also the director of Breast Oncology and Clinical Trials Education. After gaining much of her experience in malignant hematology and bone marrow transplantation for a broad range of diseases at the University of California, San Fransisco, she entered the field of breast cancer and joined the Breast Cancer Center. Prof. Rugo is an advocate for providing excellent quality care for women with breast cancer. She is an active member of the Alliance (formerly CALGB) Breast Committee, as well as ASCO, where she serves on the Guidelines Committee and as an editor for the Education Committee. At UCSF, Prof. Rugo runs the Breast Forum, a bimonthly educational session for breast cancer patients and their loved ones.

Speaking on clinical trials in breast oncology

Prof. Rugo continues to focus her work and research on breast cancer. She is the Director of Breast Oncology and Clinical Trials Education at the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. She is also a PI of several clinical trials that combine novel targeted and standard treatments across the stages of breast cancer and has published many papers across the breadth of this field. Her most current research focuses on overcoming resistance with immunotherapies and combinations of targeted therapies. She was a member of the steering committee for the EMBRACA and ABRAZO studies on PARP inhibitors and in addition to her research, Prof. Rugo regularly lectures on the treatment of and supportive care for breast cancer.
