Academic History

Ken Kato, MD, PhD, is Chief of the Department of Head and Neck, Esophageal Medical Oncology, and Gastrointestinal Medical Oncology at the National Cancer Center Hospital, Tokyo, Japan. Dr Kato leads the Biobank Translational Research Support Section within the Clinical Research Coordinating Section at the same institution. Additionally, he is the group coordinator of the Japan Esophageal Oncology Group of the Japan Clinical Oncology Group (JCOG).

Beyond his clinical endeavors, Dr Kato holds positions as the Vice Chairperson of the Japan Esophageal Society and as a Director of the International Society for Diseases of the Esophagus.

Speaking on innovations in esophageal and gastric cancer treatment

Dr Kato’s research focuses on developing novel therapeutic strategies, including targeted therapies and immunotherapies, for esophageal and gastric cancers. He leads multiple clinical trials investigating next-generation treatments and emphasizes the importance of translational research to personalize therapy and improve patient outcomes. His work often features immune checkpoint inhibitors, chemotherapy and biomarker analyses, while contributing to the future of esophageal and gastric cancer treatment.

Dr Kato has coordinated significant clinical trials, including JCOG0502, a Phase III study comparing surgery and chemoradiotherapy for clinical stage I esophageal squamous carcinoma. Dr Kato has also played a key role in several international Phase III trials for esophageal cancer, such as ATTRACTION-3, RATIONALE-306, and CheckMate-648.
