Kenneth O'Byrne

Academic History

Kenneth O’Byrne, MD, MBBS, FRACP, FRCPA, is a Professor in Medical Oncology and a Consultant at the Princess Alexandra Hospital and Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia. Prof. O’Byrne completed his medical degree at University College Dublin, Dublin, Ireland, and specialist training in Medical Oncology at the Churchill Hospital, Oxford, UK. He returned to University College, Dublin, Ireland, to complete a Doctorate in Medicine and is a member of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland.

Prof. O’Byrne is a founder of the British Thoracic Oncology Group (BTOG) and a founding member of the European Thoracic Oncology Platform (ETOP). He serves on the fellowship committees for the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) and European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Investigational Immunotherapy and is a board member of the Thoracic Alliance for Clinical Trials (TACT).

Speaking on translational research and biomarker identification in lung cancer and mesothelioma

Prof. O’Byrne’s research interests lie in translational research in thoracic malignancies to improve outcomes for patients with lung cancer and mesothelioma. He has been involved in several clinical trials in solid tumors, with an emphasis on prognostic and predictive biomarker-driven studies.

His laboratory research at the Queensland University of Technology Translational Research Institute investigates the molecular mechanisms underlying the development of lung cancer and mesothelioma, including biomarker identification, genomic instability and drug resistance.
