Michael Gnant

Academic History

Michael Gnant, MD, FACS, FEBS, is a Professor of Surgery at the Medical University of Vienna, Austria, where he also serves as President of the Austrian Breast & Colorectal Cancer Study Group. Prof. Gnant studied medicine in Vienna, and after gaining his doctorate, specialized in surgical oncology. He also worked as a Visiting Scientist at the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD. He holds an honorary MD degree of Sichuan University, Chengdu, China, and honorary professorships of Tianjin Medical University, Jiaotong University Xi’an, and Nanjing Medical University in China.

Prof. Gnant is a member of many scientific societies including ASCO, AACR, ACS, and served as an executive board member of Breast International Group (BIG). He is the author of more than 600 peer-reviewed publications and in recent years has been among the most highly cited scientists worldwide. He is also recipient of multiple awards including the Claudia von Schilling Prize from the Medical University of Hannover and the Umberto Veronesi Lecture Award of Breast Surgery International.

Speaking on endocrine treatment in early breast cancer

Prof. Gnant’s research interests include several fields of surgical oncology, in particular immunotherapy, bone-targeted treatment for tumor micrometastases, tumor dormancy and late relapse, and pathway-directed therapies such as mTOR and CDK4/6 inhibitors.
