Academic History

Riyaz Shah, MBBS, MRCP, PhD, FRCP, is a Consultant Medical Oncologist and Research Lead at Kent Oncology Centre, Maidstone, UK. Dr Shah completed his medical training at Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospital, London, UK, and was awarded a Clinical Research Fellowship by the Imperial Cancer Research Fund, which he undertook at the Hammersmith Hospital. He subsequently completed his specialist training in Medical Oncology at the Royal Marsden Hospital. Dr Shah is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians.

Dr Shah is an active member of several professional organizations, including the European Society for Medical Oncology and the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer. He also serves on the Steering Committee for the British Thoracic Oncology Group.

Speaking on advances in thoracic oncology

Dr Shah specializes in thoracic malignancies, particularly non-small cell lung cancer and malignant pleural mesothelioma. He has an extensive research portfolio and has been involved in the clinical development of targeted therapies and immune checkpoint inhibitors, including for osimertinib, nivolumab and pembrolizumab. Dr Shah has also been a strong advocate for the introduction of immunotherapy and targeted therapies into routine clinical practice.
