Robert Rintoul
Academic History
Robert Rintoul, MB ChB, PhD, FRCP, is Professor of Thoracic Oncology in the Department of Oncology at the University of Cambridge, and Honorary Consultant Respiratory Physician at Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Cambridge, UK. He qualified in medicine from the University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, UK, following pre-clinical training at the University of St Andrews, Scotland, and later earned a PhD from the University of Edinburgh for his research on chemotherapy resistance in small cell lung cancer. He completed his clinical training in respiratory medicine in London and Edinburgh.
Prof. Rintoul leads several research and clinical initiatives; he is Co-Lead of the Thoracic Cancer Programme at the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Cancer Centre and Director of the Papworth Trials Unit Collaboration. He also serves as Clinical Lead of the Clinical Advisory Group for the UK Lung Cancer Coalition and Clinical Director of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Targeted Lung Health Check Programme. He is an active member of the NHS England Lung Cancer Clinical Expert Group, the British Thoracic Oncology Group, and the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC).
Speaking on translational biomarkers in early-stage lung cancer and malignant mesothelioma
Prof. Rintoul’s research focuses on translational studies in thoracic oncology, with particular emphasis on early-stage lung cancer and malignant mesothelioma. His work integrates clinical trials, biomarker discovery, and tissue biobanking to improve early detection and treatment strategies for thoracic malignancies.
