Academic History

Prof. Samreen Ahmed, FRCP, MD, MBBS, MSc, a Consultant in Medical Oncology at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, Leicester, UK, specializing in breast and lung cancer. She is also a Professor of Medical Oncology at the University of Leicester, Leicester, UK, and was appointed an Honorary Chair of Medical Oncology in 2016. In addition, she is the Training Programme Director for Medical Oncology and the Research Lead for both breast and lung cancer within the East Midlands Cancer Network.

Prof. Ahmed qualified in medicine in 1994 at the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine, London, UK. She holds a research degree (MD) from Nottingham University, Nottingham, UK, and completed her oncology training at Weston Park Hospital, Sheffield, UK, Nottingham City Hospital, Nottingham, UK, and Leicester Royal Infirmary, Leicester, UK. She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians.

Speaking on advancing lung cancer treatment and research 

Prof. Ahmed leads clinical trials in breast and lung cancer, focusing on innovative treatment strategies. Prof. Ahmed actively contributes to national research efforts as a Chief Investigator and Principal Investigator for multiple clinical trials. She is a member of the National Cancer Research Institute (NCRI) Lung Cancer Clinical Studies Group, the British Thoracic Oncology Group (BTOG) Steering Group, and has been the Honorary Secretary for the Association of Cancer Physicians since 2019. Her work involves trial design, novel therapeutic development, and translational research, particularly in chemotherapy and targeted therapies. Through her leadership in the National Cancer Research Network, she collaborates with researchers to integrate scientific advancements into clinical practice. Her research interests extend to biomarker-driven treatment approaches and Cancer of Unknown Primary (CUP). She remains dedicated to improving patient outcomes by refining treatment strategies and mentoring the next generation of oncologists in clinical trial methodology.
