Sanjay Popat, BSc, MBBS, FRCP, PhD is Professor of Thoracic Oncology at the Institute of Cancer Research, London, UK, and consultant medical oncologist at the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, London, UK. He received his qualifications in 1994 from Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals, London, UK, and completed a PhD in molecular genetics in 2002.
He holds multiple positions both internationally and nationally, including, chairing the British Thoracic Oncology Group (BTOG) Steering Committee, being Co-Director for the NIHR London South Clinical Research Network Cancer Division, the NIHR Lung Cancer National Specialty Lead, internationally, he sits on the Foundation Council of the European Thoracic Oncology Platform (ETOP) and is participates in the European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO).
Speaking on genomic complexities in thoracic oncology
Prof. Popat is an internationally recognized expert in the treatment of lung cancer, mesothelioma, and cancers of the thymus. His research interests include the optimization of genomics into clinical practice and the development of novel therapeutics. His work includes the pivotal trial manuscripts in oncogene-added non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and mesothelioma which led to global licensing, reimbursement, and guidelines adoption. He advocates for patient education and support, supporting patients as Honorary Clinical Advisor to ALK positive UK and ROS1ders UK amongst other roles.
