Academic History

Shilpa Gupta, MD, is the Director of Genitourinary Medical Oncology at the Taussig Cancer Institute and Co-Leader of the Genitourinary Oncology Program at Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, OH. Dr Gupta obtained her medical degree from Lady Hardinge Medical College, New Delhi, India. She completed a residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Connecticut Health Center, Farmington, CT, and a Hematology-Oncology fellowship at Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., and Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Following this, Dr Gupta completed a fellowship in Genitourinary Oncology Translational Research also at Thomas Jefferson University.

Dr Gupta serves as a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Scientific Committee for Genitourinary Cancers and the Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer (SITC) Anti-PD-1/PD-L1 Resistance Task Force. She is also active in several organizations, including the American Urology Association, American Association for Cancer Research, Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network, ASCO and SITC.

Speaking on novel drug development and biomarkers in genitourinary cancer

Dr Gupta’s research interest focuses on drug development and the identification of biomarkers of response and resistance in genitourinary cancer, particularly bladder cancer. She has led several clinical trials, including investigator-initiated trials, across genitourinary cancers and is the Principal Investigator of the 2020 Department of Defense Idea Award to study biomarkers of response and resistance to immunotherapy in bladder cancer. Dr Gupta also has a research interest in resistance mechanisms to anti-PD-1/PD-L1 therapies.
