Academic History

Vivek Subbiah, MD, is the Associate Director for Drug Development and Precision Oncology at the Stanford Cancer Institute in Palo Alto, CA, and leads the Early Drug Development Program. Prof. Subbiah is also a Professor at Stanford University in the Division of Oncology and the Division of Pediatric Hematology, Oncology, Stem Cell Transplantation & Regenerative Medicine.

Prof. Subbiah received his medical degree from the Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education, Chennai, India. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH, and fellowships at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX, in both adult and pediatric oncology. Prof. Subbiah is a member of the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Translational Research and Precision Working Group and has had leadership roles and committee memberships within other organizations such as the American Society of Clinical Oncology and American Association for Cancer Research.

Speaking on precision oncology and novel therapeutics

Prof. Subbiah’s research interest is in the use of precision oncology to target patient-specific mutations and tailor treatment to individuals. He has helped to direct therapeutic strategies to ones that target the molecular profile of a tumor rather than the organ of origin. He has been a principal investigator for over 100 Phase I/II clinical trials and led several trials which have directly resulted in approvals from the Food & Drug Administration and the European Medicines Agency.
