Academic History

Walter Weber, MD, is the Chief of the breast surgery service and Head of the Medical Department of Breast, Abdomen, and Pelvis at University Hospital Basel, Basel, Switzerland. Prof. Weber studied medicine at the University of Basel, Basel, Switzerland, and completed a breast fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York, NY, during which he trained to become a SSO-accredited breast surgeon. He also spent over two years in laboratory research at the University of Basel and Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, Baltimore, MD, in the field of tumor immunology.

Prof. Weber serves on the scientific committee of the St. Gallen International Breast Cancer Conference and Vice President of the Swiss Society of Senology. He is a co-founder of the Basel Breast Consortium and a founder of the Oncoplastic Breast Consortium (OPBC).

Speaking on surgical oncology and oncoplastic breast surgery

Prof. Weber’s research interest lies in surgical oncology, with a focus on breast cancer. He aims to achieve optimal aesthetic outcomes to ensure patient satisfaction and quality of life while maintaining oncologic safety. He has been the principal investigator for several clinical trials investigating surgical techniques and has helped develop global surgical standards for breast surgery. His research has also investigated de-escalation and prevention of surgical wound infections.
