SABCS 2022 | Pencil beam scanning proton therapy

Robert Mutter, MD, Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center, Rochester, MN, discusses pencil beam scanning proton therapy (PBSPT). Previous evidence has indicated higher doses of radiation to the heart is associated with increased risk of major coronary events later in life. PBSPT allows clinicians to minimize exposure to the heart and lungs and modulate the radiation dose on the skin of the patient which may hold the potential to reduce the risk of skin toxicity observed in previous proton therapy techniques. This interview took place at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium (SABCS) 2022 in San Antonio, TX.
