Jan Theys, PhD, Maastricht University, Maastricht, Netherlands, comments on the potential of engineering bacteria to express genes that are toxic to cancer cells, activate pro-drugs, or modulate the immune system. By using these engineered bacteria in conjunction with immunotherapy, tumors can be transformed into environments more responsive to treatment. This approach has the potential to expand the benefits of immunotherapy, making it more effective for a broader range of cancer patients. This interview took place at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) 2024 Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
