Gabrielle Rocque, MD, University of Alabama at Birmingham, Birmingham, AL, discusses the challenges of treating black and indigenous patients, and patients of colour, who are underrepresented in clinical trials. Previous research has suggested that these populations have a similar interest level as patient populations who are well-represented, but that BIPOC patients are offered clinical trials less often. Logistical issues and access to care are additional challenges. The underrepresentation makes it harder for care providers to give patients information about what to expect from various treatment options. This interview took place at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) 2021 congress.
