EONS 2018 | Managing burnout and compassionate fatigue in oncology nursing

Burnout and compassionate fatigue are pressing issues in the field of oncology nursing. These two issues are distinctly different, with the latter arising from the emotional cost of caring for patients, which presents with both physical and psychological symptoms. Sara Parreira, RN, MSc, from the CUF Infante Santo Hospital, Lisbon, Portugal, shares advice on how nurses and their work places can manage stress, and avoid burnout and compassionate fatigue; for example, by setting barriers and striving for a work-life balance. This interview was recorded at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) 2018 Congress, in Munich, Germany.
