WCLC 2021 | Outcomes of patients with SCLC following surgical resection

Sara Ricciardi, MD, Azienda Ospedaliero-Universitaria Pisana, Pisa, Italy, discusses the role of surgery in the treatment of patients with small cell lung cancer (SCLC) at WCLC 2021. Dr Ricciardi outlines results from a retrospective analysis of the outcomes of patients with SCLC who underwent surgical resection in a single center between January 2000 and January 2019. The analysis found that patients with early stage SCLC who underwent surgical resection had a 5-year overall survival (OS) rate of 66% compared to a 5-year OS rate of 33% in patients with advanced SCLC. This data suggests that surgical resection followed by adjuvant therapy can improve survival outcomes in selected SCLC patients.
