WCLC 2021 | Outcomes of patients with SCLC following surgical resection

Sara Ricciardi, MD, Azienda Ospedaliero-Universitaria Pisana, Pisa, Italy, discusses the role of surgery in the treatment of patients with small cell lung cancer (SCLC) at WCLC 2021. Dr Ricciardi outlines results from a retrospective analysis of the outcomes of patients with SCLC who underwent surgical resection in a single center between January 2000 and January 2019. The analysis found that patients with early stage SCLC who underwent surgical resection had a 5-year overall survival (OS) rate of 66% compared to a 5-year OS rate of 33% in patients with advanced SCLC. This data suggests that surgical resection followed by adjuvant therapy can improve survival outcomes in selected SCLC patients. This interview took place during the IASLC World Conference on Lung Cancer (WCLC) virtual meeting 2021.
