ASTRO 2022 | Examining the effect of physicist-patient consults on patient anxiety and patient satisfaction

Todd Atwood, PhD, University of California San Diego, San Diego, CA, provides an overview of a randomized prospective Phase III trial examining the impact of direct patient care for medical physicists and the effect of physicist-patient consults on patient anxiety and patient satisfaction. Patients were randomized to receive either received 2 physicist-patient consults to educate them on the technical aspects of their radiation therapy or standard of care. Questionnaires were administered to all patients at 4 time points to assess anxiety and satisfaction. There was a significant decrease in anxiety and increase in satisfactions for patients receiving physics direct patient care versus standard of care. This interview took place at the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) 2022 Congress in San Antonio, Tx.
