ESMO GI 2024 | Development of patient-accessible therapeutics for HCC

Mara Persano, MD, University Hospital of Cagliari, Cagliari, Italy, highlights how in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in Italy, sorafenib is the only available second-line treatment in the clinic with cabozantinib used as a third-line therapy. To improve patient outcomes, future clinical trials should prioritize the inclusion of drugs not yet reimbursed by pharmaceutical regulations, thereby broadening their availability and benefiting a larger patient population. This interview took place at 2024 European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Gastrointestinal Cancers Annual Congress in Munich, Germany.
