WCLC 2026 | Applications of AI to improve surgical outcomes for patients with lung cancer

Kelvin Lau, BA, MA, MBBS, PhD, FRCS, Barts Health NHS Trust, London, UK, shares insights into how artificial intelligence (AI) could be integrated into surgical practice for lung cancer. AI could be used to create better models for predicting whether to operate and identifying which patients will have complications to intervene early. Dr Lau also highlights a use for AI in identification of patients with pathologic complete response after neoadjuvant chemoimmunotherapy who therefore may not require surgery. In addition, AI can be used to predict which patients may experience complications following surgery, allowing for resources to be focused on those affected and early intervention. This interview took place at the IASLC 2026 World Conference on Lung Cancer congress in Seoul, Republic of Korea.
