Shouki Bazarbashi, MBBS, Alfaisal University & King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, comments on the impact of prophylactic hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) and intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) on recurrence and survival in localized gastric cancer patients undergoing gastrectomy. A retrospective study compared patients who underwent curative resection with those receiving additional HIPEC/IORT. Results showed no significant improvement in relapse-free survival (RFS) or overall survival (OS) for the HIPEC/IORT group compared to standard surgery. Hospital stays were longer in the HIPEC/IORT group. This interview took place at 2024 European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Gastrointestinal Cancers Annual Congress in Munich, Germany.
