ASCO GI 2024 | Exploring gaps in neuroendocrine carcinoma understanding

Lorraine A. Chantrill, PhD, Wollongong Hospital, New South Wales, Australia, addresses significant gaps in understanding neuroendocrine carcinomas. Key questions include whether these cancers initiate as high-grade tumors or evolve from more benign subtypes. Investigating intratumoral heterogeneity and potential less active cell populations is crucial. The existence of heterogeneity between tumors within the same patient remains unexplored. Prof. Chantrill emphasizes the need to analyze different tumors within a patient for a comprehensive understanding. Additionally, she highlights the challenging patient experience due to the poor prognosis and limited treatment options, especially after initial treatments fail. This interview took place at the 2024 ASCO Gastrointestinal (GI) Cancers Symposium in San Francisco, CA.
