SABCS 2023 | Challenges in enhancing metastatic breast cancer outcomes: complexity, clones, and drug development

Virginia Kaklamani, MD, UT Health San Antonio, San Antonio, TX, discusses the challenges in improving outcomes for metastatic breast cancer patients. Highlighting the disease’s complexity with various clones appearing and mutating in different body parts, she emphasizes the difficulty in identifying and treating these clones effectively. The drug development process, taking up to ten years or more for FDA approval, involves navigating patient populations, drug toxicities, and determining the right dose. Prof. Kaklamani stresses the need to move beyond maximum tolerated doses to find the maximum efficacious dose for better patient outcomes. This interview took place at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium (SABCS) congress in San Antonio, TX.
