AACR 2022 | Prevalence of chronic comorbid conditions among adult cancer survivors in the United States

Changchuan Jiang, MD, MPH, Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, Buffalo, NY, reflects on findings from a recently published study on trends in cancer survivorship and the development of chronic, comorbid conditions likely related to shared risk factors and delayed effects of treatment. Using 2002-2018 National Health Interview Survey data, this study calculated the age-sex-race/ethnicity-adjusted prevalence and estimated the population sizes for chronic conditions among cancer survivors. This rapidly growing population represents a significant challenge for oncologists and primary doctors and the trend is likely to continue for years to come. It is imperative that we have strategies to deal with patients who have a history of cancer to provide the best care. This interview took place at the American Association for Cancer Research Annual Meeting in New Orleans, LA.
