ESMO Asia 2025 | Surrogate endpoints to predict OS in platinum-resistant ovarian cancer

Omali Pitiyarachchi, MBBS, UNSW Sydney, Sydney, Australia, comments on the need for surrogate endpoints that can predict overall survival (OS) earlier than traditional endpoints in platinum-resistant ovarian cancer (PROC). Validating these endpoints in external cohorts is crucial and six-month progression-free survival status could potentially be used as a surrogate for overall survival if validated. This interview took place at 2025 European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Asia Congress in Singapore, Singapore.

Yeah, so one of the main things is to have an earlier sort of readout. So rather than waiting for the classical endpoint of overall survival, really, is there anything that tells us earlier whether this particular investigational agent, et cetera, is going to work? So rather than waiting for the classical endpoint of overall survival, really, is there anything that tells us earlier whether this particular investigational agent, et cetera, is going to work? And so what we’re hoping to do, I mean, firstly, we do need to validate it in the external cohort. So we are collaborating with, you know, a larger sort of trials collaborative group to validate this because we need to ensure that this can be applicable across the board. But if that’s the case, then we can look at six month PF status. And then if there is a readout at that point, that could potentially be used as a surrogate for overall survival. So I think that’s really promising.
