Radu Vidra, MD, PhD, Regional Institute of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Octavian Fodor, Cluj-Napoca, Romania, reflects on recent updates regarding the need for biomarkers in community oncology settings, especially for medical oncologists working outside academic and tertiary centers. Biomarkers are important throughout the patient’s journey, from diagnosis to treatment and follow-up, and there are challenges such as test reimbursement and optimal timing for testing. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) is becoming more affordable, potentially equal in cost to stepwise testing while offering a broader genetic insight. This interview took place at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) 2024 Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
