ESTRO 2026 | Standardizing re-irradiation data and integrating patient biology

Laure Marignol, PhD, Trinity College Dublin, Dublin, Ireland, comments on the future of treatment and the importance of standardizing the recording of physical aspects of re-irradiation treatment, such as dose and volume. Increased consideration of patient, including sex, biology is needed and biological tests have the potential to inform treatment decisions and assess recovery. This interview took place at the European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology 2026 Congress in Stockholm, Sweden.

Yeah, I think in the future we’re going to have to probably be a bit more standardized and meticulous in how we record and capture the physical aspects of treatment, so the dose, the volume, and all of these metrics. But I think then we’re going to be more cognizant, for example, as I’m interested in the sex of the patients, so are we treating a female patient, a male patient and what that means biologically...

Yeah, I think in the future we’re going to have to probably be a bit more standardized and meticulous in how we record and capture the physical aspects of treatment, so the dose, the volume, and all of these metrics. But I think then we’re going to be more cognizant, for example, as I’m interested in the sex of the patients, so are we treating a female patient, a male patient and what that means biologically. So I think in the future we probably will have a bit more biological tests that we can run to tell us how much recovery has occurred and inform how we should treat these patients. So I think there’s definitely in the near future going to be a bit more biology in the MDG room and that’s how I close my argument actually in the debate.
