ASCO 2023 | Consolidation chemoradiation vs observation after 1L chemotherapy in advanced gall bladder cancers

Sushma Agrawal, MD, SGPGI, Lucknow, India, presents findings on the innovative approach of combining consolidation chemo-radiation (cCTRT) with chemotherapy for locally advanced gallbladder cancer (LA-GBC) patients who respond well to chemotherapy. The study reviewed records of LA-GBC patients treated with radical intent and identified those with good performance status (PS) and positive responses to chemotherapy. These patients underwent cCTRT, receiving radiotherapy to specific regions along with concurrent capecitabine. Results demonstrated that cCTRT after chemotherapy significantly improved overall-survival (OS) compared to chemotherapy alone, doubling survival in responders with good PS. The approach’s potential warrants further investigation through randomized studies. This interview took place at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) 2023 Annual Congress in Chicago, IL.
