ESMO WCGIC 2022 | Diagnostic challenges for cholangiocarcinoma

Lorenza Rimassa, MD, Humanitas University and IRCCS Humanitas Research Hospital, Milan, Italy, discusses the challenges of diagnosing bile duct cancer, including the specific challenges of intra-hepatic and extra-hepatic cholangiocarcinoma. A key challenge is the rarity of the disease, combined with the most frequent symptoms being common among many conditions, which means clinicians are unlikely to think of cholangiocarcinoma as a likely cause. Dr Rimassa also discusses the various diagnositic techniques that can be used and emphasises the importance of a multidisciplinary team during the diagnositic process. This interview took place at the European Society for Medical Oncology World Congress on Gastrointestinal Cancer (ESMO WCGIC) 2022 in Barcelona, Spain.
